My first passion is travel; not holiday travel but moving from place to place seeing new things.
I choose a career in education in part because it would enable me to travel. The reality was often different. A career in education had school holidays, but not the energy to enjoy them. All too often, school holidays were spent in RECOVERY MODE.
Or worse, catching up on the things 24-7 did not allow time for at work.
I’d be lucky to get a week in the summer off as a headteacher!
Yet ever since I was old enough to travel, I planned my own trips. It started simple – one destination, one coach to get me there, one place to sleep. But over the years it became extensive tours, increasingly complex.
Recently I discovered that two trips I wanted to take were so challenging to organize that even a travel operator (specializing in travel itineraries for globe trotters like myself) told me that they would NOT be able to put together what I had in mind.
So just as I have always done, I have planned it myself.
The planning and logistics for me are as enjoyable as the actual travel experience.
During Covid, the restrictions on travel hit me with the realization about how much this passion meant to me. And, alongside other reflections, my career in education was restricting my life.
When I left my headship role, the first thing I did was take a bucket-list trip, closely followed by a TERM TIME skiing break to the mountains. Sitting in a café drinking coffee after a few early runs down the slope knowing that at that moment, the slog in school would be in full swing, was a liberating moment, captured in the blog photo.
What does it mean to Live Daring Dreams…
Living daring dreams is about having the courage to do the things in life that you really want to experience.
It is a focus on the LIFE in your years, not the years in your life.
For me, that is squeezing in more travel and sharing those experiences with my family. It is about going places in a way that I want to go (both travel and life), even when others tell me that it cannot be done – I know it can!
Where will your Daring Dreams take you?
