Many people dream of success. There is a self-image in mind about what life would look like if only….
When it comes to careers, people believe that another promotion, a certain status, a particular salary will bring happiness.
In both life and career, therein lies the problem. Success alone is not enough to bring happiness.
For a start, what constitutes as success? Who defines that measurement – yourself, others, society?
The pursuit of success alone often only increases the pressure to do more, be better, go further… the concept of success is always just out of reach. Immediately one goal is achieved, the focus is switched to the next challenge.
Success can be a catalyst for failure.
Even if the pursuit to “go further” stopped after the achievement of a goal, success can become a catalyst for failure.
In the state of “settling”, many people stop doing the very things that got them to that level of success once they achieve the level they want. They get comfortable, complacent, even lazy. And then stagnation kicks in and that “success” no longer feels satisfactory.
Success and happiness are not the same thing.
It is for this reason why I help clients focus on achieving happiness – after all, this is ultimately what most want from our life and our career path.
