Unhappy teachers often ask me for advice about this issue…

Is it better to

1 Quit teaching and sign up with an agency to do tutoring or

2 Quit teaching and earn income through private tutoring.

Often, they are concerned about “taking a pay cut” they cannot afford or not finding enough work, which amounts to the same thing.

The answers they get on social media when they do a shout-out for advice will be mixed.

Some teachers will relay good experiences with agencies and recommend this as the best way forward. Others will talk about low rates of pay at agencies and recommend that the teacher will earn more per hour setting up private tutoring.

Some teachers will relay stories about finding it hard to generate enough ‘clients’ for private tutoring and scratching around for work, recommending that agencies are more reliable even if lower paid.

What happens next?

The unhappy teacher stays longer in their role because they have no actual clarity, even though they have received a lot of advice.

Career Coaching version

Let’s look at the problem through the eyes of a professional career coach specializing in education – this is what I do.

I look at the issue the teacher thinks they have:

  • Unhappy teacher stuck finding a different path (EXACTLY who I work with btw!!)
  • Concerned about “taking a pay cut” they cannot afford
  • Worried about not finding enough work to pay the bills
  • Wants to know best option – agency or private tutoring

The real issue to unpick:

  • Teacher assumes they have to take a pay cut, so limiting their own options
  • Teacher wants someone to tell them the best option between self-selected restrictions
  • Teacher is unhappy, so desperate to “get out” and not in a good place for high-quality decision-making about their currently unclear future.
  • Teacher is approaching the problem as an either / or situation

Fundamentally, the unhappy teacher needs coaching to unpick the self-imposed limitations and then explore real options with the confidence to know that these opportunities are not only out there but are options that will be a good fit.

And here is your freebie…

If you really do want to go down the tutoring route, why view it as an either / or situation?

My coaching question to you would be, “What is stopping you from doing both – signing with an agency to generate regular income and build up your private tutoring alongside?”

So, which advice have you found the most thought-provoking and useful?

The answers from the supportive network on social media or the unpicking questions that come from a professional career coach with expertise in education?

You decide.

If you want to explore real options with the confidence to know that these opportunities are not only out there but are options that will be a good fit for YOU, investing in a career coach will move you seamlessly from unhappy and stuck to a life you can hardly dream possible.

What do you have to lose except time you could be happy?
