I was terrified. How to overcome the fear of a career change.

I was terrified. Proper underpants-changing, stomach knot, bum-rumbling terrified.

Just because I’d done it before did not make this time easier. This time was different.

Post 16 – early 20s I had countless different jobs, literally – I’ve lost count! I thought nothing of moving from one to another, often in completely different industries. I was a serial career-changer.

But things were different post-Covid lockdowns. Different because the world landscape had just changed dramatically. Different because I had already invested almost 2 decades into my career in education (much of it happy – and certainly successful). Different because now I had responsibilities (husband and father, sole income provider).

Change career? Now?

The stakes were high. The risk almost impossible to take. Terror creating a form of mental paralysis.

  • Fear prevents decisions.
  • Fear prevents action.
  • Fear prevents change.
  • Fear prevents finding something better.
  • Fear prevents almost everyone from chasing their dreams.

What would you do?

Would you have the courage to take that deep breath?

Would you have the mindset to conquer your fear and change your career?

Altering your perception of fear helps conquer it.

Let’s look at it another way. You know by now I like to alter perceptions.

Fear is a bully.

  • Would you let a bully hurt those around you?
  • Would you tolerate being bullied?
  • Would you let a bully win?

Being terrified of change is real. It is natural to fear perceived risk. But you can overcome it.

You can gain the courage. You can find a path to something better. You can chase and achieve your dreams.

Don’t be bullied by the fear in your mind. Be led in life by the daring dreams you have in your heart.
