In your 50s and forced out of teaching?

2 options to help move forward positively.

It is a sad fact that many teachers and school leaders find themselves unexpectedly ‘retired’ before they had planned. In today’s education system, maybe you were

  • Quietly fired (with or without a payoff and NDA)
  • Driven out by a toxic working environment
  • Burnt-out due to demanding workload
  • Left to protect your failing physical / mental health

Whatever the cause, being suddenly ‘retired’ can have consequences beyond financial.

You planned your career path one way, then it got snatched away before your time.

How do you feel?

  • Guilt
  • Failure
  • Anger
  • Unfairness
  • Lost
  • Silenced

I know the list and mix of emotions are long and complex. I understand completely!

It may take some time but here are 2 options to consider to help you get back on your feet and find YOU again.

1 Embrace early retirement

This does not need to mean you have to sit in a chair watching daytime tv (do that if you want to). It’s a new opportunity to do things you enjoy. And it can include doing a part time job doing something worthwhile of your time and give you a sense of purpose.

2 Embrace a new career path

This does not need to mean a complete exit from education if you don’t want to end it here. There are plenty of parallel roles. It’s also an opportunity to have time-out to decide what career you would like to do next if you don’t want to stay in education.
