We all know that life is a journey, and this is true of careers. If it wasn’t, why would we use the phrase “career path”?
So, let’s unpick some common routes so you can identify and find your right path.
- The roundabout
A British road favourite designed to keep you moving and avoid sets of traffic lights (although now every roundabout also seems to have sets of lights – what’s that all about?)
In career terms, you can use a “roundabout” to flow from one direction to another smoothly and without a long delay. For example, a well-executed fast-track promotion.
But beware – the wrong move will leave your career going around in circles leading nowhere and causing you a great deal of frustration.
- The motorway highway
An essential part of the road network to enable you to travel long distances in the simplest way possible (I’d say fastest but in my recent journey I met 3 trillion traffic cones!!!)
In career terms, this would be the steady predictable route moving along through your career in stages of progression and success.
But beware – if you take the wrong slip road and find yourself heading in the direction you did not want, it is not so easy to swing around and go the right way.
- The back-roads
Often the more scenic route, great for taking detours or simply exploring along the way.
In career terms, this is the more interesting and unconventional route along your career path, ideal for those who want to focus on different experiences more than the end result.
But beware – it is easy to lose focus when you don’t have goals and taking the back roads increases the chances of getting lost. This is where you might need some help to find your path again.
- The crossroads
Unlike the roundabout which you navigate without breaking the flow of your journey, the crossroads brings you to a stop before you can move on in the new direction.
In career terms, this is the moment you push the pause button on your current career path and consider a new direction. This might mean a promotion to a new role, a change of role or a complete change of career.
But beware – it is very easy to get stuck at the crossroads if you do not know which way you want to travel next.
