I traveled 3732 miles to buy a pint of milk – and still had black coffee!

Impulses.

Those who have got to know me a little better understand that I am someone who doesn’t let much stop me when I set my mind on something.

I’m also known to be reliably impulsive, an innovative strategic thinker and a unique problem solver. Let me explain…

The problem.

I had friends drop by my university room for coffee, but I was out of milk.

The simple solution.

Leaving my friends to make themselves comfortable, I “popped out” on the 10 minute trip to Durham city market to buy a pint. The trouble was, I returned over an hour later without milk. My friends required an explanation!

The impulse.

To get the shop, I had passed a travel agent window. It advertised a flight to New York at a ludicrously cheap price. I went inside to book it. And forgot about the milk in my excitement.

The new problem.

The flight to New York departed in 5 days. It was just before Christmas. My friends all threw their hands in the air (coffee-deprived monsters) stating that I would never find a hotel. They were right.

The unique problem solver.

I discovered there was a monastery in New York and figured I could perhaps embark on training to become a monk. So, I packed my rucksack and 5 days later was on my way to New York.

The innovative strategic thinker.

Obviously becoming a monk may have secured me somewhere to stay but it was not an ideal solution. So, on board my flight, I considered where else I may try that would perhaps be less appealing to festive holidaymakers. When I landed at Newark airport, I took a cab to Harlem, where I found a near empty cheap hotel.

The outcome.

An amazing pre-Christmas trip to New York booked on impulse, turned into a reality by innovative, unique strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities. I was able to take in all the glorious sights, shop in iconic streets, and enjoy one of the best cities in the world renowned for its seasonal festivities: NYC.

Yes, in December 1999, I traveled 3732 miles when going out to buy some milk – and still my friends and I had to drink black coffee!
