I’ve been going through old photographs. A big crate crammed full of visual memories, reels of film and printed photos long before the age of digital.
It’s not a stroll down memory lane, so much as a full-blown gallop!! Places and faces… moments in time captured. It’s a snapshot of life: my life!
What I’ve found interesting in the internal impact going through this time travel. Moments that spark laughter, joy, sorrow, pain – taken straight back to the era in the image. Some faces have lasted the test of time… a journey we continue to take together. Some faces jog a memory from long ago. Other faces are forgotten – whatever their connection when the photo was taken, the seeds that were sown fell by the wayside – there is no recognition now. Not all relationships are meant to last, fewer still stand the test of time!
In my deep thinking and reflective moments, there is a richness to learning that can be extracted. On one level, I have re-discovered:
- The importance of meaningful connections, those few who walk the journey with you in life.
- What matters in life will always remain with you; likewise, things you thought mattered at the time and quickly forgotten if there’s no substance.
- That I have led an extraordinary life so far, crammed to the hilt with experiences (good and bad) that have made me who I am today.
- How the landscape is unpredictable and ever-changing, you can either adapt and happily thrive or get stuck like a fossil.
But let’s go deeper.
What if there was a life-lesson that could transform your very existence?
What if this lesson kept repeating in different layers, like peeling an onion, going around deeper until you reach the core? What would your life lesson be?
What would my life-lesson be?
Perhaps simply this…
Many times in my life I have been taken to the edge of an abyss and faced experiences so horrific -moments so coiled in pain – that I still bear the scars. Life can (and will) sometimes test the limits of our endurance. Many times in my life I have risen from my knees or from face-down in the dirt to go another round, take more punches… because even on the ropes, I will not be beaten. Life is not in the falling, nor the pain or fear; life is in the getting up on your feet, finding another way past the obstacle to reach a happier path.
Yes, I have faced my share of crevasses, filthy holes and desperate pits…. so many obstacles to take a single step at times. But I have summited endless mountain ranges, scaled to lofty heights to the top of the world…. a life full of adventure and unparalleled joy.
I have learned that the only barriers in life are those which you do not overcome.
Think about that… (here comes my analogy) let’s flip the film negative into the positive picture.
If you could overcome the barriers in your life, there are no limits.
And when you have no limits, you can dare to dream, dare to live life and feel the top of the world.
